Essential oils provide a more pleasant environment, reduce ammonia and repel insects Ammonia often accumulates inside poorly ventilated or poorly managed poultry and pig houses, particularly during winter season. Levels of 50 to 100 ppm in the pig house reduce performance, especially daily weight gain, and make the animals more prone to respiratory problems. Poultry in an environment with more than 25-50 ppm ammonia show reduced body weight, immunosuppression and enhanced susceptibility to respiratory diseases. In both pig and poultry, the increased susceptibility to respiratory diseases is due to the harm that ammonia causes on the respiratory cilia, reducing their ability to eliminate pathogens and dust.

Essential oils help to improve the air quality in pig and poultry houses

Essential oils provide a more pleasant environment, reduce ammonia and repel insects

Ammonia often accumulates inside poorly ventilated or poorly managed poultry and pig houses, particularly during winter season.

On the other hand, high levels of ammonia can create health problems for those who work in the farm.

How ammonia is produced in pig and poultry houses

Ammonia emissions in poultry and pig farms are mainly due to high protein feed. The animals cannot store the excess proteins that are not transformed into meat or eggs. The leftover amino acids are deaminated and the resulting nitrogen is excreted through urine or feces in the form of uric acid, ammonia and urea.

The process continues during the decomposition of the manure, when uric acid and urea are transformed into ammonia thanks to the activity of urease-producing bacteria.

Essential oils inhibit the growth of urease-producing bacteria

Certain essential oils inhibit the growth of urease-producing bacteria, reducing the formation of ammonia in the pig or poultry manure.

Inhibition of the urease-producing bacteria Proteus mirabilis by a product based on essential oils (PlusBreathe©) in SS Medium. Concentrations of PlusBreathe+ used: 0, 5, 10, 25, 50 ml/L. There is complete inhibition of growth at all the concentrations of PlusBreathe+

Practical use of essential oils for a cleaner air and environment

  • Administering certain essential oils by drinking water it is possible to reduce the amount of ammonia-producing bacteria in the manure.
  • When air quality is bad, spraying essential oils in the air helps to give a feeling of “cleanliness” and to prevent respiratory problems.
  • Certain essential oils are natural and non-toxic insect repellents. By spraying them in the air we can reduce the number of flies and other insects.

Products of choice

PlusBreathe© contains essential oils with natural antiseptic, antioxidant, expectorant and mucolytic activity. It has a refreshing taste.

It is indicated to improve the functioning of the respiratory system and to mitigate heat stress in birds, ruminants, pigs and rabbits of all ages. It can also be nebulized in the farm environment.
